Axis deer

 

 

Description:

 

This deer has a slender body, graceful and relatively short ears. The male has good developed antlers, typically have three points (ramifications) and about 80 cm. long. The colour is red with white spots in arranged longitudinal rows and a dark stripe along the back. The belly, the inside of the legs and the underside of the tail are white. Males generally tend to be darker than females.

Size: height between 60 cm and 100 cm, length from 100 cm to 150 cm, weight of the female between 25 kg and 45 kg, male weight between 30 kg and 75 kg.

Life Span: 9 to 13 years

Food: basically grass and leaves and fruit.

Habitat: The axis deer is native to India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It was introduced in several countries of Eastern Europe, Australia, USA, Argentina and Uruguay.
